Position Description: Position Description:

The Healthcare-Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance (HAI/AR) Program within the Communicable and Environmental Diseases and Emergency Preparedness (CEDEP) division of the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) is currently seeking an Epidemiologist 3 position. This position is currently funded from year to year through CDC cooperative agreements (grants). Some in-state and out of state travel is required.

This position will serve as the Program Director of the statewide Healthcare Associated Infections & Antimicrobial Resistance (HAI/AR) Program. The position reports directly to the HAI/AR Medical Director and works in close collaboration with the HAI/AR program executive leadership team. This position will oversee programmatic activities including the outbreak team, statewide surveillance of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) and National Healthcare and Safety Network activities, and programmatic grant and budget development. This position will serve as the lead epidemiologist in the program and will provide direction for programmatic activities regarding how to best utilize data to guide program and policy development. Additionally, this position will provide epidemiological and programmatic oversight for the implementation of MDRO and HAI prevention and outbreak response activities. This position requires substantial management and leadership skills. Duties include active participation in CDC and multi-state projects, grant writing and management, representing the department in statewide and national professional forums and interaction with external stakeholders.

This program is in the Tennessee Department of Health, Division of Communicable and Environmental Diseases and Emergency Preparedness (CEDEP). The Division includes a wide range of programs, including immunizations, HIV/STD/Viral hepatitis, TB, environmental health, emergency preparedness, and general communicable diseases.

Job responsibilities include: Design, implement, and evaluate public health programs to reduce HAI infections across a variety of healthcare settings Serve as liaison with local health departments, state and national government agencies, academic and community-based providers regarding HAI-related issues Oversee data analyses, surveillance and investigation of healthcare-associated infections Oversee the preparation of state and federal funding applications (grants and budgets) Represent the program and present on programmatic activities, including surveillance data analyses on local, regional, and national calls Manage a team of ~16 individuals comprised of epidemiologists, student interns, and administrative staff Oversee the professional development of the team and encourage professional and personal growth

Qualifications: Epidemiologist 3 Minimum Qualifications: The minimum qualifications for this level will be an MD, DO, or DVM and seven years’ experience in epidemiology; or a doctorate degree in epidemiology and five years’ experience; or a doctorate degree in public health, biostatistics, statistics, health informatics, health sciences, biomedical sciences or environmental sciences, plus seven years’ work experience in epidemiology; or a master’s degree in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, statistics or health informatics with nine years’ work experience in epidemiology; or a master’s degree in a health science, biomedical science or environmental science field with ten years’ work experience in epidemiology.

Degrees must be from an accredited college or university. CDC EIS or CDC/CSTE Applied Epidemiology Fellowship or a master’s degree in public health (MPH or MSPH) can substitute for two years’ work experience. Must have five years of supervisory experience.

Desired Qualifications: Experience writing statistical and analytical programming code in SAS or R Experience in MS Office, Excel, Access Strong oral and written communication, program management and leadership skills Experience in the field of infectious disease Experience in infection control, healthcare associated infections, antimicrobial resistance and/ or stewardship Five or more years of full-time supervisory work Experience preparing grant applications and managing budgets

Organization Description: Organization Description: The position is located at the Tennessee Department of Health, Communicable and Environmental Diseases and Emergency Preparedness program in Nashville, Tennessee The HAI/AR team at the TDH is a dynamic, multi-disciplinary, data-driven team that works very closely with external partners such as the CDC, the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Prevention, the Tennessee Hospital Association, the Tennessee Center for Patient Safety, CMS QIN-QIO, the Tennessee Pharmacists Association, End Stage Renal Disease Network 8, the Tennessee Ambulatory Surgery Center Association, and the Tennessee Initiative for Perinatal Quality Care.

Additional Information: Additional Information: The Epidemiologist 3 is a full-time executive service position. Salary dependent on education and experience, with a standard benefits package. No relocation assistance is available. The Epidemiologist 3 will have formal supervisory responsibilities. Degrees must be from an accredited college or university.
