Job Title: Postdoctoral Fellow
Job Number:
Organization: Truth Initiative

Type: Full-Time
Number of Openings: 2
Location: Washington, DC,
Position Description: WHO WE ARE

Truth Initiative® is America’s largest non- profit public health organization dedicated to making tobacco use a thing of the past. We seek, speak, and spread the truth about the devastating impact of tobacco use through national public health education campaigns, tobacco-control research and policy studies, community activism and engagement, and innovation in tobacco dependence treatment.

This position is part of the Innovations Center at Truth Initiative, a cross-functional team led by Dr. Amanda Graham that builds, evaluates, and disseminates digital tools at the frontier of tobacco cessation. Our digital cessation programs are a living laboratory for cessation research, and findings from our research are folded into the programs that we run nationally. Those programs include BecomeAnEX, a digital tobacco cessation intervention developed in collaboration with Mayo Clinic that has helped nearly 1 million tobacco users; the EX Program, our enterprise digital tobacco cessation solution designed for employers and health plans; and This is Quitting, a vaping cessation intervention designed for teens and young adults that has enrolled nearly 500,000 young people since January 2019. This is an excellent opportunity to conduct rigorous research that will make a meaningful impact in the lives of tobacco users.

The Innovations center is comprised of 27 full- time staff with expertise in tobacco dependence treatment, product design and development, software development and agile methodologies, product and program evaluation, data science, digital analytics and digital marketing. With strong established infrastructure and resources, the Innovations Center supports a “high risk, high reward” research model of collaborative, transdisciplinary team science. Investigators pursue cutting-edge research initiatives that may be difficult to pursue in traditional research settings.

The Innovations Center at Truth Initiative has two open positions for postdoctoral fellows interested in digital interventions for tobacco cessation. Fellows will be mentored by Drs. Amanda Graham and Michael Amato. Our cessation programs generate a massive trove of data that is readily available for analysis. This includes website clickstream data, interactions with digital intervention components, and user generated content from the largest and oldest online cessation community. Outcome data on a subset of our program users is available from several large-scale randomized trials. Fellows will be encouraged to transform existing data sets into publications, presentations, and grants through secondary data analysis and new data collection. Fellows will have the opportunity to design and conduct new studies that build on analyses and align with Innovations Center research priorities, and to participate in grant writing.

Our research interests are focused on optimizing the impact of our programs through expanding their reach and enhancing their effectiveness. Examples of topics for cessation research include but are not limited to: the role of mental health, depression, anxiety, and social context in intervention engagement and outcomes; poly substance use and intervention design; factors influencing engagement with digital cessation interventions; links between treatment engagement and a range of health outcomes, including cessation; tailoring programs for specific populations, especially populations that have been historically targeted by the tobacco industry; and model building for dynamically tailored content recommendation. This is an excellent opportunity to conduct research and gain experience working in a live, digital production environment.

Applicants must have a terminal degree (Ph.D., Ed.D., Sc.D., D.P.H. or M.D.) in a relevant discipline. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until positions are filled. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents. Fellowships are for 1 year, with possibility for renewal. Support for books, software, and conference travel is available. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Successful candidates will have a strong background in nicotine dependence treatment, mHealth/eHealth, or quantitative skills for data analysis.
