Position Description: The incumbent leads the Risk Factors & Screening Research team within the Surveillance & Health Equity Science (SHES) Department of the American Cancer Society (ACS). Provides leadership for updating and publishing the biennial Cancer Prevention & Early Detection (CPED) Facts & Figures and for timely provision of risk factors and screening data for ACS senior leadership and field staffs to guide cancer control planning and measure progress. Develops collaborative working enterprises with colleagues from the SHES, other departments in the Discovery Pillar at ACS, and the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) to identify timely and impactful research topics in the areas of cancer screening and other preventive measures. Establishes strong research collaborations on screening with private and public health organizations and cancer research networks such as the NCI, CDC, and academia. The successful candidate is a nationally recognized expert in cancer screening research and serves as the internal society expert in this area. Acts as a spokesperson to the media when needed. Supervises and mentors 2-3 staff members in the Risk factors & Screening Research team. Also, there are opportunities to mentor interns and postdocs.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES •Supervises the work and training of staff in the Risk Factors & Screening Research team. Provides overall direction, prioritizes research proposals, collaborates on analyses, and contributes to preparation of scientific publications. •Directs and conducts descriptive and analytic studies to test specific research questions or hypotheses to identify social determinants health system factors, and policies associated with cancer prevention and early detection. •Designs and conducts studies to examine the effects of changes in screening guidelines/recommendation and public health policies (e.g., the affordable Care Act) and of COVID-19 pandemic on receipt of screening and other preventive measures using privately and publicly and available data such as the National Health Interview Survey, Behavioral Risk Factors & Surveillance System, SEER- Medicare, and electronic medical records. •Identifies and evaluates new data resources and analytic techniques to conduct risk factors and screening research, including data linkage opportunities (such as those pertinent databases from Census, Economic or health insurance claims) to assess cancer control policies in the states and/or nationally. •Develops strong collaborative working enterprises with colleagues from the SHES, Screening Guidelines, Population Science, and other ACS departments, and the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) to identify timely and impactful research topics in the areas of cancer screening and other preventive measures. •Establishes research collaborations with scientists from the academia, the CDC, NCI, or other public or private research organizations or networks such as the Cancer Intervention Surveillance Network. •Provides oversight for the content, technical accuracy, and timely publication of CPED, respond accurately and in a timely manner to statistical and technical questions referred to Risk Factors & Screening. •Provides expert consultation to the Cancer Screening Guideline Development group, Patient Support (Cancer Control), ACS CAN, and other national and field staff on the sources, use, limitations, and interpretation of risk factors and screening data. •Represent ACS as media resource when needed and respond to media inquiries. •Publicizes ACS’ studies’ findings through social media platforms and by speaking at professional meetings and to the media; consults and interprets results of epidemiologic studies related to cancer screening with the media as a recognized expert in the field.

Qualifications: PhD in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, or a related field, and at least five years experience in public health. Strong record of authorship and research productivity.

SKILLS: Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in team setting.

SPECIALIZED TRAINING OR KNOWLEDGE: •Extensive knowledge of cancer epidemiology, including methods and study design •Working familiarity with SAS and SUDAAN. Knowledge of basic statistics with good quantitative skills. •Publication productivity is measured by number of publications, authorship position (first, second, or third author), and standing of journals in which articles are published.
