Position Description: The Health Educator will work with the Outreach and Engagement Unit to develop educational curricula to increase community preparedness and resilience. The Health Educator should be familiar with priority communities and be able to integrate concepts of health, public health and structural inequity that lead to disparate outcomes. The Health Educator should be experienced with plain-language communication and be comfortable accurately communicating public health and health-related concepts to a variety of audiences, both internally and externally. This position is Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with occasional work after hours and on weekends to support Program activities. This is a grant-funded position; continuation of the position is contingent upon sustained funding.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

• Develop educational curricula for public-facing trainings on key topic areas, including development of an all- hazards curriculum inclusive of training materials, facilitation guides, and evaluation tools.

o Establish seasonal workshop schedules to be incorporated into Program’s Community Engagement Plan.

o Analyze evaluation data to inform curriculum revisions and updates.

o Identify optimal partner agencies for curriculum development or delivery.

o Work with Content Creator to develop and edit content for public-facing materials.

o Deliver preparedness trainings to partner organizations and the public.

• Collaborate with internal and external partners as needed to foreground the health impacts of public health emergencies.

• Develop and implement an internal training curriculum to improve knowledge among outreach unit staff in key topic areas.

• Participate in Public Health Preparedness program activities, including trainings, exercises, and emergency responses.

• Serve as a core member of the response team for the Department for a variety of emergencies.

• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s Degree in nursing, public health, education, communications, or related field.

• Clinical background a plus.

• 2 or more years of experience working on public health or community health education.

• Excellent and adaptable communication skills; experience in plain language communication.

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Detail-oriented and excellent organizational skills.

• Ability to present information effectively to a variety of audiences.

• Flexibility, professionalism and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously are highly valued attributes.

Organization Description: The Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH), through its Bioterrorism and Public Health Preparedness Program (BT-PHP), located within the Division of Disease Control, is the lead administrative and planning agency for public health emergency preparedness and response in the City of Philadelphia. BT- PHP is responsible for establishing local public health preparedness priorities, developing and testing response plans, coordinating with local, state, and federal partners, and managing the public health response to real events.

Additional Information: This is not remote work. The applicant will work from the Health Department offices or other locations as assigned. This job may require moderate physical effort including lifting materials and equipment of less than 50 pounds and involves viewing a CRT or VDT screen 50 to 75 percent of the time. The position requires responding to public health emergencies on short notice and some after-hours activities to achieve Program objectives.

This position reports directly to the Community Engagement and Outreach Manager.
