Position Description: |
The NBS Epidemiologist position serves within the Epidemiology Resource Center (ERC) at the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH). The purpose of this position is to minimize morbidity and mortality associated with reportable conditions among Indiana residents by conducting a broad and complex range of investigative and analytical epidemiologic activities.
The scope of the NBS Epidemiologist position includes, but is not limited to, general maintenance and support activities for the state surveillance system NBS, serving as a liaison between front-end-users and technical staff on the use of NBS, providing epidemiologic support to surveillance analysts in fulfilling data requests and conducting system maintenance, preparing and conducting detailed trainings, both for internal and external staff on NBS and other surveillance related topics.
• Provide consultation and technical assistance to IDOH staff on the state surveillance system, NBS • Serve as a liaison between IDOH subject matter experts and IDOH technical staff on surveillance and NBS-related needs and facilitate recurring meetings with internal stakeholders • Conduct educational presentations and/or trainings for a variety of audiences, including local health departments, health care providers, veterinarians, and the general public • Demonstrate and communicate subject matter knowledge of the epidemiology and biology of infectious disease; • Conduct routine epidemiologic surveillance for a variety of reportable conditions and coordinate with external partners (laboratories, long-term care facilities, etc.) to ensure timely disease reporting; • Manage disease data collected through routine surveillance, public health investigations, and applied epidemiologic studies; • Provide epidemiologic consultation and technical assistance to local health departments, health care providers, veterinarians, and the general public with respect to infectious diseases; • Lead or coordinate epidemiologic investigations of individual cases and/or outbreaks of infectious diseases or other projects within ISDH; • Use leadership and systems thinking in epidemiologic planning and policy development • Assist in the development of quality improvement projects as needed; • Prepare and disseminate written and oral reports and presentations that communicate necessary information to internal and external partners; • Serve as a backup to other epidemiologists on the NBS/Surveillance Team; • Perform related duties as assigned. • The incumbent will serve as the agency’s epidemiologist-on-call for several weeks of the year. This will require the incumbent to be able to answer the on-call phone and make critical decisions after business hours for the duration of the epidemiologist on call rotation.

Qualifications: |
o A master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., public health, biological sciences, or social sciences) and ? 2 years’ relevant public health experience, OR o A doctoral-level degree in epidemiology or other relevant field, OR o A graduate or professional degree in a health-related field (e.g., RN, MD/DO, DDS/DMD, DVM, PhD, RS) with specific epidemiology training (e.g., MPH degree, CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service, or CSTE Applied Epidemiology Fellowship), OR o A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and ? 4 years of relevant public health experience.
