Position Description: This is advanced technical work pertaining to the investigational and educational activities of Environmental Health for the City of New Haven, Connecticut's third largest city. (pop 135,001, 2022 census)

Investigates by observing, sampling, testing, and reporting in areas such as: hazardous materials, food protection, treatment and protection of water supplies, lead poisoning prevention, water pollution control, sewage and waste disposal, swimming pool and public bathing area sanitation, shellfish sanitation, air pollution control, insect and rodent control, school and institutional sanitation, accident prevention, public health nuisance control and other factors of the environment that cause or have deleterious effect upon the health and well being of the public. Conducts special surveys, make reports and recommendations concerning findings and issuance of orders to correct conditions and practices in violation of regulations. Assists in program planning and implementation.

Qualifications: Requirements Include: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in the physical, chemical or biological sciences or public health; and a minimum of 6 years employment with investigation duties in environmental/public health or in lieu thereof a combination of academic training and related employment totaling at least 8 years; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:

Thorough knowledge of the methods and techniques in governmental public health, sanitary and pollution regulations. Considerable knowledge of the laws, ordinances, rules and regulations relating to public health, sanitation, and pollution control. Knowledge of public health administration and organization. Ability to interpret and apply laws, ordinances, rules and regulations relating to public health, sanitation and pollution control. Ability to develop a thorough knowledge of the laws, ordinances, rules and regulations relating to public health, sanitation and pollution control. Possession of valid State of Connecticut driver's license. Possession of a Certificate of Registration for Sanitarians issued by the State of Connecticut, Department of Health Services, or qualification to obtain a Certificate within 6 months from date of employment.

Organization Description: The mission of the New Haven Health Department is to ensure and advocate for the health and well-being of all New Haven residents.

The New Haven Health Department has a long tradition of protecting the health of city residents through disease prevention and health promotion. Established in 1872 as the New Haven Health Commission, the Department has evolved from its beginnings combating poor sanitary practices and yellow fever epidemics. We've emerged as a leader in the fight against HIV/AIDS early in the epidemic, establishing one of the first syringe exchange programs in the country 28 years ago. Today, we continue to provide the essential public health services and enforce the Public Health Code as outlined in state statutes and the city charter. This also includes responding to complaints of public health nuisances as well as ensuring environmental health and safety and curbing disease outbreaks.

We work to ensure the health of our residents, particularly our most vulnerable neighbors. We provide school nursing services, maternal and child health case management, health screenings, and health education.
