Position Description: |
POSITION OBJECTIVE The Mary Ann Swetland Center for Environmental Health is an academic research center that studies the complex interplay between environmental determinants and population health outcomes. The center places special emphasis on community-engaged approaches that address the role of structural racism in creating and sustaining environmental health inequities. The center seeks to translate these findings into policies, practices, and relationships that promote community and population health equity. The Research Associate will execute collaborative community action research through implementation and evaluation of a systems change intervention, i.e., the Nourishing Power Network. The Nourishing Power Network includes four interdependent intervention components: Advisory Council, Fellowship, Fund, and Networking. The intervention is designed to transform local food system dynamics by accelerating support for community-driven food justice initiatives that further nutrition equity among Black, Latino/a/x, Asian and Indigenous communities in Greater Cleveland. Under guidance of the PI and the Nourishing Power Leadership Team that includes community partners, the Research Associate is expected to work independently, design and plan projects, oversee collaborations, supervise students, manage complex project budgets and grant reporting, and carry out research activities of an assigned project through completion. The Research Associate will utilize community and stakeholder engaged research methods including both quantitative and qualitative techniques. The Research Associate will provide oversight to the intervention overall and will offer leadership to executing the Nutrition Equity Fund component, including design and evaluation of grant making processes and outcomes. The Research Associate will keep the PI informed of research progress within the study overall and will provide recommendations on study design and adaptations within this pragmatic trial. The Research Associate will present data and findings to diverse audiences and will actively support grant proposal development. The Research Associate must uphold the values of the Center including a commitment to racial justice, collaboration, community engagement, inclusivity, and innovation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 1. Plan and execute the Nourishing Power Network intervention designed by the PI and community partners. Execute the Nutrition Equity Fund component of the intervention working directly with community partners to develop, manage, and evaluate the grantmaking process from RFP to evaluation. Assist with and coordinate the other components of the intervention (i.e., Advisory Council, Fellowship, Networking) performed by other lab members and community partners ensuring adequate resources, assisting with study design, implementation, and data analysis and interpretation. Oversee progress of the intervention and provide regular progress reports to the PI and Nourishing Power Leadership Team; and provide input and recommendation to PI regarding significant developments in research projects. (40%) 2. Oversee research work, including management of multiple sub-contracts and ensure projects are being completed according to the research plan. Mentor and train lab members, including students, post-docs, and community partners. This will involve teaching other members of the lab about community action research techniques and methods applied within the Nutrition Equity Fund intervention component. Assist and teach both established and new research techniques to other lab members to facilitate intervention implementation and evaluation. Coordinate trainings for lab members, including community partners. (25%) 3. Assess, update, and develop new standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the Nourishing Power Network study. Assist the PI and independently develop new techniques and protocols for intervention implementation and progress reporting, including financial reports of matching funds required for grant reporting. (20%) 4. Present data and findings to reach diverse audiences, including scientific audiences as well as leaders from community organizations, coalitions, and local governments. Execute communications plan for the Nourishing Power Network intervention to translate the study’s findings via social media and project website, bi-monthly newsletter, quarterly networking events, and via user-friendly decision support tools. Consult with study teams to provide technical assistance to support the effective translation of study findings using diverse approaches including toolkits, data briefs, white papers, networking events, conference presentations, media coverage, and manuscripts. Prepare manuscripts and other reports for dissemination to national and local audiences; and contribute preliminary data and writing for grant proposal development. (15%)

Qualifications: |
QUALIFICATIONS Education/Experience: PhD or another terminal degree (MPH, MSW) is required. Minimum of 2 to 5 years of related experience demonstrating progressive responsibility. Preference to those with expertise in the following areas: food systems, community development, program evaluation, population health, applied mixed methods intervention research, and/or community-engaged research.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES 1. Advanced skills in community and stakeholder engaged research, including experience with partnership formation and collaborative approaches to the conceptualization, implementation, and evaluation of community-based studies. 2. Advanced skills in designing community-based interventions, including the use of mixed methods to evaluate processes and outcome metrics. 3. Excellent analytical skills; ability to formulate findings and recommendations from the analysis. 4. Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills; must demonstrate the ability to effectively and professionally communicate and work with various individuals within and external to the University. 5. Strong organization skills; ability to multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines. Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy, time management skills, and follow-through. Must be able to work under pressure and conform to shifting priorities, demands, and timelines. 6. Effective leadership skills; ability to lead, train, work with, and elicit cooperation from team members and staff. Lead team using a strengths-based approach to team make-up and roles. 7. Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within a team. Must be highly motivated, responsible, dependable, and a self-starter. 8. Effective problem-solving skills; must demonstrate innovation and creativity, sound judgment, and good decision-making. 9. Good computer skills, including MS Office suite, Canva, REDcap, Mailchimp, and/or Basecamp. Ability to learn new programs as needed.
