Position Description: The Department of Public Health is seeking to hire a twelve-month, non-tenure-track Assistant Professor of Practice to teach primarily in person in the undergraduate public health program. The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching and service. The position begins July 1, 2023. This is a five- year appointment (with option to renew based on performance) with annual reviews each year.

The department is home to 15 faculty members and 3 staff members. The department currently offers one undergraduate major (BSPH) with a concentration in Population Health Sciences, an undergraduate public health minor, a Master of Public Health (MPH) program (Distance Education and Campus-based format) with five MPH concentrations, and a PhD program in Health Sciences.

Responsibilities:

The successful applicant will be expected to demonstrate excellent teaching, primarily in undergraduate public health classes as listed in our BSPH catalog. The successful applicant would teach courses such as: Health of Adolescents, Aspects of Aging, Social and Behavioral Theories in Public Health, and Population Health, though there is flexibility to adjust assigned courses based on applicant’s expertise. Based on expertise and department need, there may be additional teaching opportunity in our graduate programs. Additionally, the position will engage in service activities at the department, college, and university level. The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching a 4/4/2 course load (4 courses each in Fall/Spring semesters; 2 courses in Summer semester).

Qualifications: Qualifications: The successful candidate for this position must have a PhD or DrPH in Public Health or a closely related field. With assurance from dissertation chair, an applicant who graduates by May 31, 2023 will be considered.

Desired: Earned doctoral and MPH or MSPH degrees from a school or program of public health accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) Teaching experience at the undergraduate student level Teaching experience using both online and in- person modalities Experience with the Canvas learning platform Work experience in public health practice Knowledge of evidence-based approaches that integrate public health, social service, and health care sectors Experience or interest in supervising and mentoring Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) and/or Graduate Teaching Associates (i.e., GTAs as instructors of record).

The Department of Public Health is one of eight departments within the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences (CEHHS). Our MPH has over 50 years of CEPH accreditation, and our newer BSPH and PhD programs are also CEPH-accredited. Ours is a growing department, providing public health training and education at the undergraduate, MPH, and PhD levels. We have a history of strong and positive relationships with local public health organizations, especially the Knox County Health Department (KCHD) and Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) through our Academic Health Department partnerships.
