Position Description: |
The Disease Modeling Lab (https://diseasemodeling.github.io/) in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at UMass Amherst, has an immediate opening for a post-doctoral associate, who is highly motivated to work in the area of social determinants of health modeling and committed to health equity and social justice. The research in our lab focuses on developing innovative mathematical models in the convergent areas of operations research and machine learning, to solve complex public health problems driven by social and economic issues. The post-doctoral associate will work on a project funded by the National Science Foundation and conducted in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team of experts from operation research, computer science, social sciences, epidemiology, and economics, from UMass Amherst and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The scope of the project is to develop innovative simulation and network generation algorithms for joint modeling multiple related diseases, that are spread through common modes of transmission such as through sexual transmission networks and injecting drug use networks. This includes developing innovative methods to model the mechanisms between social and economic conditions and behaviors that increase the risk of disease progression and transmission. The outcome of the work is a decision-analytic tool for a unified approach to overall disease prevention by focusing on the social and economic drivers of diseases, and suitable structural interventions for disease prevention.

Qualifications: |
PhD in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research or similar fields, or in fields related to mathematical modeling diseases. Strong mathematical background in simulation, stochastic processes, and machine learning. Strong computational modeling skills in Python or R, and ability to learn new tools such as Netlogo software. Experience in developing large scale dynamic simulations, or agent-based simulation, and simulation-based or numerical optimization. Experience in development of models in the area of public health is a plus.
