Position Description: Responsibilities The incumbent in this position will work within the new Drug Overdose Surveillance and Epidemiology Unit (DOSE) and will focus on all aspects related to geo-spatial analyses, GIS, and mapping. The incumbent will join a new and dynamic team working to develop a ‘real-time’ data system to enhance and intensify surveillance and epidemiology activities related to fatal and non-fatal drug overdoses. This includes developing an operational geospatial data information hub for ODUH staff. This hub will be critical for strategic planning, understanding prevention efforts occurring throughout communities on the ground, and evaluating impacts of overdose prevention efforts – layering and linking multiple sources of data to get a comprehensive view of the drug overdose epidemic and the critical work occurring throughout the state address it. This position is a unique opportunity to join a team working to predict, prepare and respond to spikes in drug overdoses, work towards tackling a present public health emergency, and have a real impact by protecting communities across NYS. The incumbent will join the newly created Drug Overdose Surveillance and Epidemiology (DOSE) Unit within the Office of Drug User Health (ODUH, AIDS Institute) and will contribute to ongoing drug use and harm reduction surveillance activities by completing mapping projects using Geographic Information System (GIS) software. GIS is a cross-cutting tool that can be used to describe how health-related indicators vary over geographic regions and support public health programs. The incumbent will identify and synthesize geospatial trends in drug overdose morbidity and mortality from multiple NYSDOH data systems and ODUH programs, service delivery information such as naloxone, buprenorphine administration and/or activities within Drug User Health Hubs - syringe exchange programs. This position is supported by the New York State Public Health Corps Fellowship Program.

Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a related field and two years of experience in the evaluation and/or analysis of health, human services or related programs and/or fields; OR an Associate’s degree in a related field and four years of such experience; OR six years of such experience. A Master’s degree in a related field may substitute for one year of such experience.

Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in Public Health or a related field. Experience with SAS, SPSS, R or other software used in data analysis. Experience with ArcGIS, MapInfo, Tableau or other software used in developing GIS maps. Experience working in public health surveillance for chronic or communicable disease; experience developing databases; experience working with a data team on time- sensitive projects.
