CDC Office and Location: This ORISE fellowship opportunity is currently available in the Division of Environmental Health Science and Practice (DEHSP) within the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S.
Research Project: The CDC Environmental Public Health Tracking Program is seeking an individual to be trained in communication, marketing, and education activities to help support the program’s mission of providing health and environmental data, tools, and resources that drive actions to improve community health. The fellow will have the opportunity to collaborate and apply learned communication skills across all program focus areas, from epidemiology and data science to informatics and program services.
Learning Objectives: The participant will receive training in communications, education, partnership building, and evaluation while participating within a highly collaborative team in a dynamic, fast- paced environment. The participant should expect to gain skills and experience in a variety of areas, such as:
Communicating environmental health data and information to multiple audiences, including public health professionals, various sub- populations of the general public, partners, grantees/recipients, internal audiences, and more. Developing content for communication products such as web content, social media posts, program briefings, and success stories. Planning, implementing, and managing national communication and marketing programs, projects, and initiatives. Creating and designing content for multimedia projects like animations and videos for use in social media or other channels. Evaluating the reach of various communication products and strategies to determine their effectiveness. Participating in and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams. Expanding knowledge by attending trainings and webinars on communication and education topics (e.g., plain language, digital first principles, best practices for quality training, evaluation). Anticipated Appointment Start Date: September 1, 2023. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).
