CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the Coronavirus and Other Respiratory Viruses Division (CORVD), National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

Research Project: The Outbreak Response and Community Transmission (ORCT) Team, Epidemiology Branch, CORVD, at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is seeking a motivated Master’s level graduate with a background in epidemiology, biostatistics, informatics, or related field.
This project will offer a unique opportunity to train with a multi-disciplinary team focusing on innovative ways to gather, analyze, and disseminate public health information. The Coronavirus and Other Respiratory Viruses Division provides the scientific and programmatic foundation and leadership for the diagnosis, prevention, and control of SARS-CoV-2, RSV, and other respiratory viruses, domestically and internationally. The ORCT team supports outbreak response and research platforms that supplement our understanding of SARS-CoV-2, RSV, and other respiratory virus transmission and severity in community settings. The Team is particularly interested in exploring the potential utility of new and under-used data sources that could allow for better or timelier understanding of the epidemiology of respiratory viruses.
Learning Objectives: The selected candidate will train with mentors on the team on the analysis and visualization of various information sources. The participant will primarily be involved in projects that include: (1) assisting in the coordination, analysis and visualization of SARS-CoV-2 and RSV secondary attack rates and transmission dynamics through CDC-sponsored case- ascertained household transmission studies, (2) data management to support outbreaks or field investigations related to respiratory viruses, (3) provide epidemiological or data support to investigations to better understand impact respiratory viruses have on populations in community-based settings. The participant will also develop an understanding of how analytics and visualizations support the response to SARS- CoV-2, RSV, and other respiratory viruses.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: September 25, 2023. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
