Position Description: The Microbiologist will perform multiple, complex, in-house developed and commercially developed serologic assays used in the diagnosis of measles and mumps under CLIA. Ensures that incoming specimens are processed, tracked, and triaged maintaining "chain-of-custody." Performs laboratory testing and prepares electronic diagnostic reports following the CDC Infectious Diseases Laboratories Quality Management System (QMS) and CLIA guidelines. Performs testing for domestic and international serologic studies and maintains complex results databases. Should be proficient with Microsoft Excel; working knowledge of GraphPad Prism is a plus. Applies knowledge of the technical rules and procedures applying to scientific projects and programs to document and prepare analyses and reports of findings for tests and studies. Maintains and updates laboratory protocols and SOPs for mumps and measles procedures on diagnostic assays and maintains records in ELIMS. Follows appropriate CLIA, QMS and safety standards at all times. Effectively handles unexpected conditions arising during the normal course of work. Calibrates and operates sophisticated laboratory instruments that are necessary to perform tests, analyses, and other procedures in conducting experiments and studies. Prepares and delivers written and oral reports to a variety of individuals and groups in informal settings.

Job Duties

Perform CLIA compliant domestic and international reference diagnostic serology testing (IgM, IgG, avidity) for measles and mumps. Prepare electronic patient test reports for state public health laboratories and maintain branch serology log and patient report binders. Assist with changes to SOPs, maintain ELIMS inventory and prepare quarterly reports of quality indicators for measles and mumps assays and present results at quarterly QMCS meetings Provide serologic testing for domestic and international research studies and serosurveys and when appropriate present findings at scientific meetings and symposia. Operate in compliance with the CDC Infectious Diseases Laboratories QMS, CLIA and regulatory requirements. Interact professionally with state public health personnel to ensure CLIA compliance with 50.34 regulations Troubleshoots diagnostic assays using checkerboard assays, anticipates assay performance problems and calibrates laboratory equipment to make sure they are working properly and efficiently for routine diagnostic testing. Qualifications: Serology experience performing IgM and IgG ELISA.

Proficient in Excel and experience using ELIMS or another similar electronic reporting system.

Knowledge of quality control and quality assurance and ability to interact professionally with quality manager and teammates.

Analytical skills and knowledge to understand and anticipate problems with complex and multi-component immunological tests Comprehensive knowledge of CLIA, QMS and laboratory safety requirements.

Knowledge of computer systems, methods, and applications, including application of commercial statistical and data management software packages for compiling and processing experimental data, and performing statistical analysis of data.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology or a related discipline (e.g., biology or biochemistry) - Required

Master's in Bioinformatics, with experience in viruses and whole genome sequencing - Required

Laboratory experience in Serology: 2 years - Required

Bioinformatics: 1 year - Required

Working with blood sample/essays: 1 year - Required

Working with measles and mumps: 1 year - Required

CDC work experience: 1 year - Strongly Preferred

ELIMS: 2 years - Preferred

CLIA: 1 year - Preferred
