We’re seeking a dedicated and experienced chemist to play a pivotal role in improving the health of newborns in our beautiful state.

Public Health Laboratories (PHL) – Newborn Screening

Why This Position Matters: At the heart of our mission is the commitment to improving the health of infants born in Washington State. As a Lead Laboratory Technician, you will lead a team of skilled technical staff. Your role is vital for producing quality lab results. Expert knowledge of all aspects of testing including the ability to perform all procedures is crucial to be successful in this role.

What You'll Be Doing:

Leading and directing day-to-day laboratory activities in collaboration with laboratory supervisors and lab coordinator. Ensuring the highest quality of lab results in your designated unit(s). Maintaining expert knowledge of all aspects of testing, with the ability to perform all procedures. Taking signatory responsibility for test results and actively training analysts within your unit(s).

Qualifications: Option 1: A bachelor’s degree in microbiology, public health, chemistry or medical technology or related field which includes at least 30 semester or 45 quarter credit hours in college-level microbiology or chemistry; AND four (4) or more years of professional experience in a clinical laboratory including newborn screening.

Option 2: A master’s degree in microbiology, public health, chemistry or medical technology or related field; AND two (2) or more years of professional experience in a clinical laboratory including newborn screening.

Option 3: A Ph.D. degree in microbiology, public health, chemistry or medical technology or related field; AND one (1) or years of professional experience in a clinical laboratory including newborn screening.

Organization Description:

The PHL supports the efforts of local health jurisdictions in routine disease monitoring as well as during disease outbreaks. The PHL assists health care providers by identifying organisms and shares the results of reportable conditions with local health jurisdictions as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is the only Washington lab that identifies rare diseases like Rabies, Hantavirus, West Nile virus and analyzes clinical samples of statewide outbreaks of human illness, biotoxins and bacteria for shellfish contamination, and identifies agents suspected in terrorist events.
