CDC Office and Location: A post-doctoral fellowship is currently available with the Immunology Laboratory Team in the Immunology and Pathogenesis Branch (IPB), within the Influenza Division (ID), in the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia. ID provides the scientific and programmatic foundation and leadership for the diagnosis, prevention, and control of influenza domestically and internationally.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

Research Project: The selected participant will receive training in assessing innate and adaptive immune responses to influenza infection and vaccination in target populations using comprehensive immunome, metabolome, microbiome, epigenetic and proteome analyses for the ongoing clinical studies. The fellow will have an opportunity to be trained in utilizing appropriate animal models to provide supportive data to clinical findings.

Learning Objectives: During the fellowship, the participant will:

1. Receive training in assessing innate and adaptive immune responses to influenza infection and vaccination in humans and appropriate animal models as needed using state-of-the-art immunomics tools 2. Receive training in multiparametric high dimensional flow cytometry, multibead arrays for cytokine measurements, growing influenza viruses and relevant virological assays. Facilities exist to be trained in the contemporary technologies such as single cell genomics, proteomics, and other molecular analyses as needed. 3. Participates in scientific seminars/trainings of the team, Branch, Division as well as neighboring Emory University to expand knowledge base. Anticipated Appointment Start Date: March 1, 2024. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for up to five years, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full time.

Participant Stipend: Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate. The stipend range is estimated at $6,081-$7,289 monthly.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Qualifications: The qualified candidate should be pursuing or have received a doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields (immunology, virology, molecular biology or cell biology). Degree must have been received within the past five years, or expected to be earned by July 1st, 2024.

Preferred skills:

Expertise and familiarity in one or more of contemporary immunological, virological, molecular biological, and biochemical skills is highly desired. Willingness to learn and be and self- motivated with a passion for science to find solutions to public health problems, a collaborative attitude, and good time management skills. Strong knowledge of statistical methods and have previous experience performing research studies.
