This is an unpaid opportunity in the Office of Public Affairs and Equity.

The mission of the Department of Health is to protect and improve the health of the people of Washington State. The Office of Public Affairs and Equity (OPAE) strives to advance health equity and develop communications and health promotion and Education products that meet the needs of the communities we serve. OPAE’s Center for Health Promotion and Education (HPE) uses health promotion theory, best practice, and effective communication strategies to improve health literacy and health behaviors of people in Washington. We assist the agency in strategic thinking and consistent messaging related to preventing disease, promoting a healthy start in life, making healthy choices, and accessing services.

Description of Duties to be performed: Description of duties to be performed: Help develop the next video for our Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Basics YouTube Video series and supporting social media reels. This includes the following tasks:

Review existing materials and data. Conduct internal key informant interviews. Establish audience testing/community feedback plan. Write script, in collaboration with partners. Conduct audience testing for script. Plan and coordinate filming, animation, and translation. Develop and implement simple communication plans to share videos with relevant audiences. Review and finalize animation. Work with social media team to film reels promoting information in the video/our website.

Role and Responsibilities: The intern will help develop the next video for PFAS basics video and supporting social media reels. Claire Nitsche will be the mentor for the intern, and the intern will primarily work with her. Emma Wolf will support Claire as a mentor and manage HR and business issues related to the intern.

Requirements:

A current MPH candidate, or master’s candidate in a related field. Our DESIRED intern profile includes:

Basic understanding of public health practices. Understanding of social determinants of health. Knowledge of PFAS or other environmental health issues. Understanding of risk communication, health communication psychology, behavior change theory, or social marketing. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to Plain Talk and proofread. As well as the following Competencies, Abilities, and Skills

Ability and desire to work in diverse and inclusive environments. Strong organizational and collaboration skills with the ability to multi-task and meet established deadlines. Strong analytical, problem-solving, critical, and innovative thinking skills. Ability to work well independently in a fast- paced team environment. Commitment to serving the public, particularly underserved and under-resourced communities, and advancing the intersection of equity and racial justice in public health.
