CDC Office and Location: Fellowship opportunities are available at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) with the Enhanced Surveillance Platforms Team in collaboration with other teams in the Surveillance and Prevention Branch (SPB) of the Coronavirus and Other Respiratory Viruses Division (CORVD) within NCIRD, located in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
Research Project: The candidate will participate in network project and data management and data analysis for three large national networks that are designed to examine disease burden and clinical epidemiology of respiratory viral infections and assess the effectiveness of licensed vaccines (influenza, COVID-19, and RSV). Cross-cutting collaborations with other branches and divisions at CDC may also be possible. The candidate will collaborate with a growing team of medical officers, epidemiologists, data analysts, and project managers.
Learning Objectives: Some training opportunities for the fellowship are as follows:
1. Learn how to manage, report, visualize, and interpret public health surveillance data and use data to answer applied public health research questions as they pertain to characterizing the disease burden and clinical epidemiology of respiratory virus infections and assessing strategies for respiratory infection prevention. 2. Participate in designing and refining epidemiologic protocols, including reviews of scientific literature, standardized operating procedures, descriptive analyses and statistical modeling of data, and communicating and reporting trends. 3. Participate in the management and coordination of large public health surveillance and applied research networks. 4. Review and update externally facing webpages and dashboards for quality improvement, clear communication, and optimal user experience, including addition of epidemiologic input on relevant public health information to identify and address knowledge gaps. 5. Participate actively in operational and strategic meetings with teammates and leadership to learn how programmatic decision making occurs. 6. Attend scientific seminars, agency trainings, and partner meetings for continuing education on respiratory virus epidemiology, vaccine effectiveness and policy, and development of data science and other professional skillsets. 7. Help senior scientists prepare and deliver written and oral reports to a variety of individuals and groups in both informal and formal settings. 8. Anticipated Appointment Start Date: May 1, 2024. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full time.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
