CDC Office and Location: A Health Equity/ Social Determinants of Health/ Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (HE/SDOH/DEIAB) fellowship opportunity is currently available within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP), Office of the Director (OD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
Research Project: The selected fellow will receive training and mentorship from NCCDPHP/OD Health Equity & DEIAB leadership and staff in scientific approaches, program or policy implementation and evaluation, strategic planning, and technical assistance to inform the development of effective strategies and interventions to reduce disparities in chronic diseases among one or more disproportionately affected populations. The fellow will have the opportunity to interact with and learn from multidisciplinary teams, NCCDPHP’s senior leadership team, and employees from across the center. The fellow will have the opportunity to engage in a diverse portfolio of activities. These activities will be based on the fellow’s area(s) of interest, training, experience, and the mission of the NCCDPHP.
Learning Objectives: The activities listed represent possible learning opportunities for the selected fellow:
Conducting systematic literature reviews, environmental scans, and assessments pertaining to health equity approaches, interventions, policies, and practices. Scientific writing, in addition to the review and editing of reports, web pages, and other content designed to advance the knowledge of, and principles associated with HE. Framing and communication strategies to educate employees and the public about HE/SDOH approaches and DEIAB in NCCDPHP workforce and workplace. Design, conduct, and interpret an analysis on public health data. Conduct oral presentations at an internal NCCDPHP engagements. Multidisciplinary collaboration, coordination, action planning, and communication as part of NCCDPHP Health Equity Council, DEIAB Council, and other Health Equity/SDOH/DEIAB related workgroups. Building organizational capacity to advance health equity and enhance DEIAB initiatives through the implementation of needs and trainings assessments other related assets in NCCDPHP workforce and workplace. Learn NCCDPHP center priorities and areas for innovation by observing NCCDPHP HE strategic planning discussions and other related engagements. Anticipated Appointment Start Date: 2024. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed up to five years upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR).
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
