Position Description: |
The Big Data Health Science Center and Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the Arnold School of Public Health (ASPH) at the University of South Carolina (USC) invite applications for a nine-month open rank faculty position in Biostatistics. All areas of big data expertise will be considered but candidates with research expertise in machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), generative AI, large language modeling, natural language processing, explainable AI (xAI), network analysis, high-dimensional data analysis, pattern analysis classification, and risk prediction with applications to public health and/or medicine are particularly encouraged to apply.
All applicants must have an earned doctoral degree by the start date of employment in biostatistics, statistics, computer science, bioinformatics, or a related field. Applicants at the rank of Assistant Professor must also have demonstrated evidence of high- quality scholarly research in the development of statistical methods, and expertise in using data from electronic health records, brain imaging, clinical trials, or large- scale -omics studies (e.g., genomics, proteomics, metabolomics), the potential to successfully compete for external research funding, teach graduate-level courses, and collaborate with public health and/or biomedical researchers. Applicants at the rank of associate or full professor must be accomplished scholars with years of experience in research, teaching, and service commensurate with academic policy and: 1) a substantial publication record in top-tier journals, 2) a record of securing research grants from national and international funding agencies, 3) a history of successful graduate student supervision, and 4) the leadership skills necessary to mentor junior faculty and students, contribute to curriculum development, and engage in interdisciplinary collaboration across the university. The successful candidate will contribute to the Department’s mission of research and training by maintaining an active methodological research program, collaborating with multidisciplinary research teams, mentoring graduate students, and teaching graduate-level biostatistics courses to biostatistics and public health students.

Located in the capital city of Columbia SC, USC is a comprehensive Carnegie University of High Research Activity and Community Engagement. USC has five Health Science Units in addition to ASPH: 1) School of Medicine in Columbia, 2) School of Medicine in Greenville, 3) College of Nursing, 4) College of Pharmacy, and 5) College of Social Work. ASPH was founded in 1975. Among public universities in the US, the ASPH ranks second in overall enrollment and fourth in NIH funding. ASPH consists of six departments and several research centers that address topics such as disease prevention, nutrition and physical activity, cancer, health services and policy, rural health, HIV/AIDS, aging, and health disparities.
The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics is home to 33 full-time faculty members,11 in the Biostatistics Division and 22 in the Epidemiology Division. The faculty’s robust research portfolio includes funding from a broad spectrum of federal agencies (e.g., NIH and CDC) and non-profit organizations. The department has a rich tradition of producing outstanding trainees. Currently 112 students are enrolled in our master’s and doctoral degree programs. The department, school, and university provide a strong collaborative environment for cross- disciplinary team science across the public health research continuum. The Big Data Health Science Center (BDHSC) serves as a campus-wide interdisciplinary enterprise that conducts leading-edge research and discovery, offers professional development and academic training, and provides service to the community and industry. The BDHSC, led by Drs. Xiaoming Li and Bankole Olatosi, consists of five content cores (AI for Sensing and Diagnosis Core, Electronic Health Records Core, Genomics Core, Geospatial Core, and Social Media Core) and two functional hubs (Technology Hub and Business/Entrepreneurship Hub) that aim to collectively promote the utilization of Big Data analytics in health research, services improvement, and academic training.
