Position Description: |
Position Summary Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation (PIRE) is an independent, nonprofit organization merging scientific knowledge and proven practice to create solutions that improve the health, safety and well-being of individuals, communities, and nations around the world. We are dedicated to reducing health disparities and inequities through community-based, participatory research, implementation science, and rigorous evaluation. Our scientists examine risk factors and outcomes from the micro through to macro levels, with a goal of understanding the specific impacts of policies on health and transforming public policy. PIRE is looking for a PhD-level Injury Epidemiologist-Associate Research Scientist to add to our National Capital Region Center team located in Beltsville, Maryland. The Associate Research Scientist supports the research needs of various projects by contributing to the design, implementation, analysis, and oversight of activities, and writing reports and manuscripts. The person in this position will support across injury areas, including supporting a variety of epidemiological and economic analysis efforts in topics related to injury and substance use; providing technical assistance through PIRE’s Children's Safety Network Economics and Data Analysis Resource Center; contributing to reports and publications; and writing proposals. This person may also direct small and moderate-sized projects of their own. One writing sample is required with the application. This is a remote full- time position. The salary for this position ranges between $75,000 to $90,000 per year. Some Primary Duties and Responsibilities • Develops and oversees the execution of research protocols and project workplans. • Plans, performs, and interprets statistical analyses. • Engages in cleaning, linkage, and analysis of large administrative and health care claims data sets. • Contributes to development, maintenance, and application of injury incidence/cost/return-on-investment models. • Conducts rapid scoping reviews and systematic reviews to synthesize data. • Provides technical assistance around injury prevention. • Develops and contributes to research articles for publication in peer-reviewed journals, as well as reports and other deliverables. • Develops project budgets and plans expenditures to ensure that projects come in at budget. • Presents research findings at professional/scientific meetings and conferences. • Stays abreast of new and relevant literature and research trends. • Performs other duties related to the specific Center and research project, including but not limited to participation in the design and/or operation of research and evaluation plans. • Develops small- to medium-sized proposals and applications for funding. • Participates in preparation of sections of proposals with other more senior staff. Job Requirements • Training or experience in injury and substance use prevention. • Ph.D., or equivalent advanced degree preferred in Epidemiology, Public Health, or a related field. • A minimum of three years of experience is highly desired. • Proficiency in statistical languages, such as R, STATA, SAS, SPSS, preferably more than one. • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. • Excellent organizational, data management, programming, and analytical skills. • Strong analytic skills, including the ability to understand, analyze and organize data, and display data in professional charts and graphs. • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. • Ability to provide technical assistance to public health professionals across sectors to support injury prevention efforts in the communities, as needed or requested. • The warm and friendly manner of a technical assistance provider. • Ability to manage multiple projects efficiently and effectively. • Self-motivated • Ability to work independently and within a team. • Ability to focus on detail and precision in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. • Two professional references provided with the application. • One writing sample with the application. • Fully vaccinated against COVID-19. • Able to work in the United States for any employer.
